Mother, Mrs. Howard Baker, Looks On As Tragedy Strikes
MISHAP OCCURS NEAR NEW GARDEN
Lad Struck In Slipping Off Belt From Tractor to Grinder
Jay Baker, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Baker, was injured fatally in an accident at their farm one and one-half miles west of New Garden shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday.
The youth died of a fractured skull and other injuries at 11:25 p.m. at the Central Clinic.
Together with his brother, Leroy, 16, he had just finished grinding feed with the aid of a tractor, and when he attempted to slip off the belt from the tractor to the grinder, the belt struck him and knocked him against the grinder.
Mother Sees Tragedy
The tragedy happened before the eyes of his mother. Mr. Baker was attending a milk producers' meeting at the Mahoning Dairy, near Westville, at the time.
Jay was a student at Hornet's Nest school and a member of the Junior Farmers 4-H club of Hanover township. He also was a member of the Christian church Sunday school at New Alexander. He was born in Hanover township April 3, 1927.
In addition to his parents and brother, he is survived by his grandfather, Harry Baker, of New Garden, and his great grandmother, Mrs. Lena Ewing, of Winona.
The body was to be removed to the home this afternoon from the Maple funeral home at Kensington.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Baker home, in charge of Rev. H. F. Miller of the Christian church. Burial will be at Grove Hill cemetery at Hanoverton."
