BORN OF A SWEDISH IMMIGRANT, HE GRADUATED FROM HIBBING, MINNESOTA HIGH SCHOOL IN 1939. ATTENDED HIBBING JUNIOR COLLEGE BEFORE ENROLLING IN THE ENGINEERING PROGRAM AT MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY. BEFORE FINISHING, HE VOLUNTEERED TO SERVE HIS COUNTRY DURING WW II. HE JOINED THE U. S. AIR CORPS IN 1943 WHERE HE SERVED AS FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR IN FLORIDA. WHILE STATIONED IN FLORIDA, HE MARRIED MARJORIE MAHON OF KEEWATIN, MINNESOTA. HE WAS DISCHARGED 1946 AND RETURNED TO MICHIGAN COMPLETING COLLEGE, RECEIVING A B. E. DEGREE IN 1946.

A FORMER EXECUTIVE WITH M. A. HANNA. BECAME ASSOCIATED WITH BUTLER BROTHERS, WHICH MERGED INTO HANNA MINING COMPANY. HE SERVED AS MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEER, PIT FOREMAN AND SUPERINTENDENT IN HIBBING. JOINED THE ORE SALES DEPARTMENT OF HANNA IN CLEVELAND, OHIO. PROMOTED TO MANAGER OF ORE SALES, VICE PRESIDENT OF DOMESTIC OPERATIONS AND LATER EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT. ELECTED TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND WAS NAMED PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER IN 1978. ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD IN 1982.

HE PLAYED AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THE CHURCH, HAVING SERVED AS A TRUSTEE AND PRESIDENT OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH OF ROCKY RIVER, OHIO BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF LUTHERAN HOSPITAL OF CLEVELAND. HE MADE THE GREATEST IMPACT AND RECEIVED THE GREATEST RECOGNITION IN THE WORLD OF BUSINESS WHICH ALLOWED HIM MANY HONORS AND AWARDS DURING HIS CAREER FOR HIS ACTIVITY IN THE CHURCH, BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY ENDEAVORS. HE AND HIS WIFE WERE GENEROUS CONTRIBUTORS OF TIME AND MONEY TO LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS AND SCHOOLS.
