PATROLMAN 1/17/1972 - 4/8/1998

WALTHAM - William E. Benoit, 64, a retired Waltham police officer, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at Newton Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

Born in Malden, the son of the late Ernest and Velma (Kingsbury) Benoit, he was raised and schooled in Waltham and graduated with Waltham High School's Class of 1961. He was a Waltham resident for most of his life.

Officer Benoit became a reserve Police Officer for the city of Waltham on January 16, 1972, and was appointed to a permanent position as Officer on July 1, 1974.

He was a member of the "Team Police Unit" between September 1983 through August 1986, and was appointed to the Detective Bureau in January 1986, where he served through April 1993. He was then named the communications officer.

During his tenure of service to the city, he was cited and given accommodations various times for his actions in response to situations he faced, was honored as Police Officer of the Month in July 1994, and had been recognized as Police Office of Year. He was a member of the various police associations and fraternal organizations.

A past member of the Massachusetts National Guard, he recently had been a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Billerica. He was an avid photographer, loved country music, enjoyed vacationing in Florida and has been a member of the Benevolent Lodge of Elks 953, Waltham.

Mr. Benoit leaves his daughters, Amy Beth Saulnier of Billerica, Stacey Benoit of Leominster and Jill Rich of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; his sister, Martha Kingsbury of Billerica; and his grandchildren, Caitlyn Lessa, Jacob Brackett, Courtney Buckley and David Saulnier, Jr.; and four nephews.

He was the grandfather of the late Michael Lessa Jr.

Private services were held for his family.

Per his own request, his remains will be placed at his favorite location in Florida.
