Elmer Alfored Amen Sr. died peacefully in his Woodland home Tuesday March 29 at the age of 79.

Born March 22, 1922 in Sacramento. Mr. Amen had been a life-long Yolo County resident. He was the son of the late Lydia and Henry Amen Sr.

Mr. Amen grew up on his mother and father's Ventura Ranch. After finishing High School, Mr. Amen enlisted in the Navy on March 4, 1944. He served on the U.S.S. Mercy Hospital Ship for two years. While sailing off the island of Okinawa, Japan, he witnessed a Japanese suicide bomber hit the U.S.S. Missouri. Fortunately only the suicide bomber was killed. Four years ago, he toured the Missouri now stationed at Pearl Harbor, and he got to see where the suicide bomber hit the ship. Mr. Amen was honorably discharged form the Navy in 1946.

Mr. Amen retired in September 1986 from the City of Woodland after 31 years working for the Public Works Dept. and managing the Woodland Cemetery for 20 of those years.

Mr. Amen was a member of the Woodland Presbyterian Church and a member of the Woodland Elk's Lodge No. 1299 for 46 years.

Family and friends remember the fun times he and Dee Dee had traveling with the Elk's Tail Enders, his large collection of Beanie Babies, label pins, and coins. You would often see him riding around town in his yellow Volkswagen (Bug) with the American flag waving on the antenna. Mostly, Mr. Amen will be remembered for all the fun, loving times he spent with family and friends.

Mr. Amen is survived by his daughters, Diana Pearson and husband, Ron; Joanne Branigan and husband, Ron; Cindy Dahler and husband, Mike; sons, Elmer Amen Jr., and Bill Sims; grandchildren, Kim Snyder, Karla Lindstrom, Steve Pearson, Christopher Branigan, David Amen, Jenny Thorp, Dawn Gasque, Andy Dahler, and Penny McGrath; 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; sister, Pat Giguiere, brother, Henry Amen Jr., and his wife Linda; numerous nieces and nephews, and his good friend, Vesta Wirth.
