Miss Alice Jones Dies at Batesburg

Batesburg, Jan. 14 - Miss Alice Jones, 79, beloved citizen of Batesburg, died today at her home. She had been in declining health several months.

Miss Jones was the last member of one of Batesburg's pioneer families, different members of which have had much to do with the history of the town. A daughter of Seaborn and Nancy Jones, for a number of years she, with her sister, owned and operated one of the leading ladies shops in this section of the state. She was keenly interested in everything touching the growth of her home town and in various ways she had had a definate part in community activities. The Batesburg Women's club was organized in 1911 and she was elected its treasurer and as such officer served continously until her death, missing but one meeting of the club until her recent illness. A by-product of this club is the Batesburg Cemetery association, of which Miss Jones had served as treasurer since its organization, and in this capacity she rendered inestimable service.

Her genial disposition, kindness of heart, faithfulness in any service undertaken, unquestioned honesty and numerous other sterling qualities had endeared her to a host of relatives and friend.

The supreme interest of her life was her church and she was the oldest continous member of Batesburg Baptist Church.

Surviving her are two grandnieces, Mrs. Vera Derrick and Mrs. Simon Bouknight, both of Batesburg; five nephews, D. K. Jones of Columbia, A. C. Jones, C. E. Jones, A. S. Jones and W. S. Jones all of Batesburg; four nieces, Mrs. W. L. Hook of West Columbia, Mrs. George Stuckey of Bishopville, Mrs. D. W. Daniel of Clemson College, Mrs. J. R. Unger of Batesburg; a number of great-grand-grandnieces and nephews and a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Maxie C. Collins will be in charge, assisted by the Rev. W. U. Brown of the Faith Lutheran Church. The deacons of the church will be active and honorary pallbearers.
