Richard Whitney Averett, 59, passed away Friday, December 19, 2008. He retired from the State of North Carolina and will be remembered as a revered father, grandfather, and loyal friend.
While serving in the Navy, during Vietnam, Richard worked the flight deck of the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy and was a specialized mechanic working on A621 Intruder aircraft.
Richard was a lifelong member of the Black Mountain community. While a member of the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in his early adulthood. Richard found God's presence in nature and showed his moral goodness through acts of selflessness and loyalty to friends and family. Known as an excellent wing shot, Richard was also a craftsman, building custom sporting rifles and creating bird carvings. Richard was an accomplished woodsman, and as a boy, grew up in the hunting tradition of Sherman Burnett and Woody Brown. While a private man, Richard particularly enjoyed his dogs and bird watching from his front porch.
He is survived by his mother, Lula Karnas, of Black Mountain; wife, Sirpa Averett, of Black Mountain; daughter, Madeline Averett, of Arden; son, John and wife, Rachel Averett, of Black Mountain; sisters, Charlotte Velez, and Margaret Summey, of Black Mountain; brothers, Frederick Averett, of Lakeworth, Fla., Edward Averett, of Morganton; two grandchildren, Maliah and Daniel Averett, of Black Mountain.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Harwood Home for Funerals, 208 W. State St.
Burial will be in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at 12 p.m.
