LEO ALBERT APPEL was born Sept. 21, 1909, the sixth of eight children to JOHN and MARY (EGGENBERGER) APPEL - descendants of German immigrants - at their farm in Plainview, Minnesota. Upon the death of his father in 1926, Leo, at age 16, helped his mother run her farm throughout the Depression years and later he worked as a carpenter. Driving his Model A Ford, Leo arrived in Cooke County in 1937 for a visit; however, he decided to remain.
I, LILLIAN GRACE, was born Nov. 7, 1916, the ninth of 12 children to JOE and EMMA (PULTE) FISHER, descendants of German immigrants, at their farm 2-1/2 miles southeast of Muenster. After attending the Sacred Heart School, the Muenster Public School and Our Lady of Victory High School in Fort Worth, I graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Gainesville Sanitarium School of Nursing in 1938.
Leo and I were married Sept. 3, 1940 in Sacred Heart Church and lived and worked in Muenster for 3-1/2 years. Leo worked as a carpenter throughout the area; on the construction of Camp Howze near Gainesville and also in maintenance at the camp. I worked as a private duty nurse between the births of DOROTHY on Aug. 8, 1941 and LEONA on Feb. 7, 1943.
In the fall of 1943, Leo moved to Houston, Texas to do defense work at the shipyard. In February 1944, our daughters and I joined him and we settled in Galena Park near Houston. There our sons were born, JOHN on April 21, 1944, WILLIAM (BILL) on Jan. 10, 1948 and STEPHEN on Nov. 30, 1950.
Leo and I were founding members of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Galena Park. Our first Sunday Masses were held in an old building with wooden planks as seats. In a few years we had a church, rectory, school, convent and community center.
After World War II, Leo maintained a career in residential construction until his retirement in 1971. He died on Nov. 17, 1977 and is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Muenster.
After 40 years of nursing, I retired in 1983, returned to Muenster and moved into my home on the southeast corner of Maple and Sixth Streets. Much of my time is spent visiting my children: DOROTHY KNAPP in Lakewood, Colo.; LEONA SMITH with her husband in the U.S. Army; JOHN in Carrollton; BILL in Houston; and STEVE in Tyler, Texas. I have 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Besides my hobby of traveling, I am enjoying my retirement in Muenster with my family and friends.
