MILITARY: Pension Statement of Apollos Austin; 1777-1780; Court records for
the Probate Court for the District of Newhaven, Rutland Co., VT, submitted 8
Sep 1832 and signed by the submitter; Photocopy of court records and
transcription by Marjorie Stoner Elmore in poss of AFAOA correspondence files.
TEXT (Summary): Voluntarily enlisted Feb 1777 at Suffield, CT for 3 years, and
saw action at the burning of Danbury, CT, Peekskill, NY, the Battle of
Germantown (having joined up with the main army under Genl. Washington), was
besieged by the British at Mud Island Fort, NJ for 16 days, suffered at Winter
Quarters at Valley Forge 1777-1778, Monmouth, NJ, spent the summer at the
Highlands in NY and the next winter at Reading, CT, returning to the Highlands
in the spring of 1779, participated in the taking of Stoney Point on the
eastern shore of the Hudson River, then to Morristown and to winter quarters at
Basken Ridge 1779. He did duty as a musician beginning that winter until his
discharge in the spring of 1780. The court found that Apollos was entitled to
his pension.
