Pvt Charles M. Goff, 19 was the 404th Hoosier victim of the Vietnam War when he died Thursday 21 September 1967 at Con Thien while serving with Co H, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
Charles was twice decorated with the Purple Heart, was a squad leader and a gunner. He received one of his Purple Hearts for being wounded twice within a 24 hour period.
Arrived in Vietnam in April 1967 Charles entered the Marine Corps three months after graduating from Washington High School in Indianapolis, IN.
Officals at Washington High School discribed Charles as having a "very pleasant personality" and said he was always "neat and dependable."
Charles was a four-year member of the Washington Continental Marching Band and was a member of the school's ROTC program for three years.
He was the eighth Washington graduate to die in Vietnam.
Charles' brother, Marine Lance Corporal Michael A. Goff, 20,recently returned from 14 months in Vietnam, where he was wounded. His father, Charles H. Goff, who was a Marine Sergeant, was awarded a presidential unit citation for valor in the front lines on Tarawa in World War II.
