Richard joined the Marine Corps at Buffalo, New York on 22 Mar 1944, his 18th birthday. After boot camp he was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina on 27 Jun 1944 where he was assigned to the 69th Replacement Battalion.
On 8 July 1944 Richard was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 29th Marine Regiment. He was transferred to D Company, 2nd Battalion, 29th Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division on 7 Sep 1944.
On 1 August 1944 he embarked with his unit and sailed aboard USS General C.G. Morton (AP-138) at San Diego, California: arriving 17 August 1944 and disembarking 17 August 1944 at Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands.
The 2nd Bn, 29th Mar, 6th Mar Div embarked on board the USS George Clymer (APA-27) on 14 March 1945 at Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands and sailed therefrom on 15 March 1945. Arrived and disembarked 1 April 1945 at Okinawa, Ryukyus Islands and participated in action thereat against enemy Japanese forces.
Richard was killed in action at Sugarloaf Hill on Okinawa 19 May 1945 suffering a gunshot wound to the head and initially buried in the 6th Marine Division Cemetery #1, grave 476, row 20, plot B.
Richard's remains were returned to his family on 14 April 1949 for burial at Mt Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga, New York.
