Henry was born in the workhouse, being the illegitmate son of Sarah HILTON and Henry GREEN. His father was an apprentice brick maker and was refused permission to marry [so family lore says]. Henry GREEN did however support Henry's upbringing, in the 1861 census Henry jnr is a scholar living with in his 'teacher's' Elizabeth BOWER'S household. Elizabeth's step father was William HUTCHINSON and William was the maternal grandfather of Henry GREEN, so Henry Green HILTON'S paternal great grandfather.
Henry became a furnaceman at the steelworks and lived at 22 Princess Street, where many of his wife's family lived too.
