John served in the Union Army in the Civil War, enlisted in Oswego Co., Scriba, NY.
He settled in Montcalm County, MI in April, 1867 after being released from the Army.
He entered the ministry in 1870 and was connected with the Mt. Hope United Brethren Church for 18 years, the balance of the time he was with the Free Baptist. He owned and managed a farm, was the Commander of Wm. B. Stewart Post, No. 324 of the Grand Army of the Republic.
