Edith Marie Jones Brooks of Xenia, was born to William Davis and Ollie Jordan Jones on December 4, 1916, in Lawrence County, Kentucky. She went home to be with the Lord and her beloved husband on March 23rd at the age of 94. Moving to Clark County, Ohio, early in 1921, she was educated mainly in the South Charleston schools, graduating from that high school in 1934, with highest scholastic honors in her class. Married to Bruce Brooks on September 1, 1934, she joined him in his ministerial labors a few years after his conversion on February 16, 1936. Active in their home church, the Pentecostal Church of Christ in South Charleston, the couple then founded the Jamestown Pentecostal Church of Christ in 1941, where they pastored until March, 1950. Called by God to pastor in Xenia, they began their work in this city in a small church on Stelton Rd., which they had been instrumental in building in 1946. Moving to Xenia in July, 1950, they enlarged the church that fall, followed over the years by several other additions and buildings. In 1977, they built the present sanctuary. In 1982, the name was changed from First Pentecostal Church to Xenia Christian Center. They remained as senior pastors until June, 1985 when they stepped down to serve as associate pastors with Rev. and Mrs. Ron Wagers until June, 1986. Beginning in March, 1950, on their first Sunday as pastors in Xenia, they began a weekly radio broadcast over WJEL, Springfield, known as "The Voice of Pentecost". They soon added a daily broadcast, and for a lengthy period, 4 times daily, and through various years, their broadcasts were released over WPFB, WCHO and stations in Ironton, Wellston and Mansfield, OH, as well as Pennington Gap, VA. When an AM station opened in Xenia, they transferred to it, and broadcast daily over both it and its sister FM station for many years, finally giving up the work in Feb. 1993, because of Rev. Brooks' ill health, completing a span of nearly 43 years. As pastors they were well known for their passion to win the lost to Christ, using radio, house to house visitation, operating numerous buses for Sunday School, night classes and for several years, a Christian Day School. Edith served as secretary-treasurer of the church throughout the years of the pastorate. During their pastoral tenure in Xenia, the Brookes were instrumental in purchasing land for a Christian camp on Mound Rd. in Clinton County, which was owned and operated by the Ministerial Association of which they were members. Mrs. Brooks served as food purchaser and was in charge of cooking for the youth camp for several years. Since her husband's home going in 1995, Edith has continued visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and home shut ins on a weekly basis, teaching Sunday School, preaching occasionally, and mentoring new Christians in her home, as well as bookkeeping for a family business, Sparkle Centre Auto Bath, Inc., until she sold the business to her son, Mark in Jan., 2000. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Bruce, three brothers Lowell, Wayne and James Jones and four sisters, Wanna Jones, Kitty Thorley, Virginia Myers and Willa Dawson. Always interested in winning the unsaved to Christ, she has helped to support a number of mission endeavors in Brazil, India, Peru, Mexico, France, Pakistan, Belarus, Israel, Sudan, Armenia, Sierra Leone, Guatemala and Japan, in addition to her church's missionary outreach. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia. Neeld Funeral Home is in charge of services.
