Born in Ireland and coming to N.Y. as an infant with his parents, Robert grew up to be a farmer and stock breeder. In 1863 the tax list for District 28 in Bath Township records that he owned 312 acres of land valued at $16,000. In 1860 he married Harriet Erwin, daughter of General Francis Erwin and Sophia McCall. They had 8 children, which were baptised 'en masse' at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath. Robert was a member of the Steuben Co. Agricultural Society, and was president of same in 1867-8. He served on the Vestry from April 1870 until the time of his death in 1876 by the kick of a horse.
