James Leon Askew, 85, of Medford, died Monday (Aug. 17, 1998) at his home. A private service will be held Wednesday. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.
He was born June 19, 1913, in Chipley, Ga.
On March 13, 1946, in Medford, he married Marion C. Borg, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970 from the San Francisco Bay area.
Mr. Askew played semi-pro baseball in the Carolina leagues before World War II. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Monrovia, taking part in nine invasions in the South Pacific and Africa.
He was a civil service supervisor in the shipping and receiving department at a naval supply center in Oakland, Calif., until his retirement in 1970.
Mr. Askew was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball for eight years in Medford and was on several bowling teams.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Barbara Cabral, White City; four sons, James L. Jr., Newark, Calif., John, San Jose, Calif., Larry, Redding, Calif., and Terry, Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Fred D. Jr., Folkston, Ga., and Gene Paul, Orlando; two sisters, Christine Askew, Sylvester, Ga., and Mable Johnson, Georgiana, Ala.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine E. Askew.
