John Marriott was born on 15 November 1827 in East Markham, Nottinghamshire, England to William Marriott and Jane Talbot Marriott. John immigrated to the United States in 1850 and came directly to LaMoille, Bureau, Illinois. He worked at various jobs for $11 per month and eventually purchased a meat market. He gained the friendship of Isaac Norris and together they went into the business of rasing cattle. In the "History of Bureau County" it is said that he owned 200 acres of land and 600 head of cattle. John married Elizabeth Ann McClimont on 10 June 1852. To this marriage five children were born: Joseph, Elenor Jane, Laura Belle, Isaac Norris and John McClymont. Around 1880 John was deeply in debt and sold off all of his property and livestock. He left Illinois for Nebraska where he lived for a while with his sister Jane. At some point John and Elizabeth were divorced. On 6 February 1888 John married Laura Durham in Princeton, Bureau, Illinois. John and Laura lived in Prophetstown, Whiteside,Illinois until his death on 20 August 1920.
