William D. Abert, 79, of 1009 W. Berwick St., Easton, died Saturday in Holy Family Manor, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth (Drissell) Abert and the late Gwen (Whitford) Abert He was a salesman for Schaible's Sunbeam Bakery, Easton, for 38 years before retiring in 1971. Born in Easton, he was a son of the late Severin and Catherine (Blank) Abert. He served on the council of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Easton, and was parish chairman of the Allentown Dioceses Charity Drive for the past 25 years.
A member of Union Council 345, Knights of Columbus, Easton, Abert was financial secretary there for 35 years and past district deputy. He received the Knight of the Year Award in 1954 and the Knights of Columbus Family Award in 1985. He was treasurer and a past faithful navigator of Pope Pius XII Assembly.
Abert was a 1925 graduate of Easton High School and member of the school's undefeated football team that year. He later played football for Eastern Michigan University, where he graduated in 1931. He coached the Phillipsburg parochial football team for two years.
Surviving with his widow are a son, William D. Jr. of Bethlehem Township; two daughters, Mary Catherine, wife of Franklin S. Heffelfinger of Northampton, and Patricia L., wife of Lt. Col. Gregory Wojtkun of Fairfax, Va.; a brother Harry of Lancaster; a sister, Amelia Ferry of Easton, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in Death: by a daughter, Barbara Ann, and a son, John J.
Services at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday in the Curran-Finegan Funeral Home, 1837 Washington Blvd., Wilson, will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in the church.
