Press S. Alexander, 91, of Wilmington, died 3:45 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012 at his daughter's home wrapped in his family's love. His wife of 58 years, Kathryn Brooks Alexander, preceded him in death on May 20, 2002. They were married on March 3, 1944.

Mr. Alexander was born on Aug. 26, 1920 in Connersville, Ind., a son of the late Herbert L. and Glendora Norris Alexander. He was a 1938 graduate of Williamsburg High School in Indiana. He joined the U.S. Navy in February 1942 and served 46 months as an aviation radioman on seaplanes during World War II.

Mr. Alexander farmed full time for 23 years in Darke and Greene counties. He also worked for Farm Credit for six years and then the Federal Land Bank of Washington Court House for 10 years before retiring in 1985. He had been a member of the Greene County Farmers Union, the Greene County NFO, and the Clinton County Farm Bureau. He had also been active in several local organizations including the B.P.O. Elks 797, the Wilmington Lions Club, Wilmington Noon Rotary, the Chester Friends Meeting and Elks golf.

In the 1960s, Mr. Alexander was elected Beavercreek's representative to the Greene County Democratic Committee for a four-year term. He was later elected executive chairman of the Greene County Democratic Committee before moving to Clinton County.

Mr. Alexander is survived by a son, Stewart (Lynn) Alexander of Wilmington; a daughter, Sarah (French) Hatfield of Wilmington; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Lawson (Barbara) Alexander of Charlottesville, Ind., and Evelyn Alexander; two grandchildren, Tara (Chad) Mason and Ryan (Melissa) Alexander; three great-grandchildren, Chloé Mason, Kailyn Mason and Violet Alexander; many dear nieces and nephews; his buddies, Lester Jenks and Eli Yovich; his special friend, Dorothy Mockabee; and his foreign exchange son from Austria, Josef Doppler, and his extended family.

In addition to his wife and parents, four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Scott and Vivian Alexander, Kash Alexander, Kenneth and Betty Alexander, and Herbert Alexander Jr., two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Allegra and Fred Hammond and Helen and Clyde Thornberg preceded him in death.

A graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 27 at the Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington, with Jim Ellis officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 27 at the REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St. in Wilmington.

A memorial service will also be held at a later date at Chester Friends Meeting.
