James Reynolds Cooper was born James Reynolds Pounds in Hancock Co. IL, son of Joseph Pounds and Mary Jane Ackerson. After Joseph's early death in 1855, James and his sister Mary ("Mollie") were kept by their Aunt Naomi Cooper (FAG # 41955281), who refused to return them to their mother. To decide the issue, Naomi (along with her husband Theodore Cooper) took the children to Nebraska, leaving no forwarding address. James Reynolds changed his family name to Cooper when he turned 21. Molly was married under her original family name.

His first wife was Sarah Taylor, daughter of Dr. Alexander Taylor of Ashland, Nebraska. After her death in 1887, he married Nancy Grace Baird. Sarah Taylor died in Smith Center, Smith Co., KS, and her grave has only very recently (2012) been located. See the link below.

James's son by Sarah Taylor, Alexander Taylor Cooper (1883-1949), would eventually become the family historian. In 1941, he wrote an essay called "The Pound Family," in which he traces the history of the Pound/s, Ackerson, and Cooper families. The essay was passed around for years among family historians, and is now widespread on the internet. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery along with his wife Charlotte.
