Birth: 1850
Fulton County
Illinois, USA
Death: 1875

This man has the same name as the famous poet William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) [FAG #142], to whom he was related. He appears in Masters' "Spoon River Anthology" under the name Percy Bysshe Shelley.

His father was Henry L. Bryant, born in Massachusetts in 1817, and his mother Elizabeth Saunders, born 1826. They were married in Fulton Co. in 1843. Other children born to this couple were Thomas, Lizzie, and Caroline. (Data from the 1850 and 1870 censuses.)

In Masters' poem the young man is said to have been killed in a hunting accident. His father, Henry L. Bryant, erected a marble shaft on his son's grave "On which stands the figure of a woman / Carved by an Italian artist."

The nearest common ancestors of the man buried here and the poet who was his namesake are Ichabod Bryant (1699-1759) and Ruth Staples (1702-1777). They are the great grandparents of the poet and the great-great grandparents of the man buried here.

Some details of Henry L. Bryant's career can be found in "The Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and Fulton County" (1905-1908). The information linking William Cullen Bryant and his namesake was kindly provided by David Peterson, a descendant of the Bryant family.
