Enlisted on 20 August 1862 at Romulus, Wayne County, Michigan; he was residing in Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan prior to his enlistment at 19 years of age; mustered in on 27 August 1862, Company D, Michigan 5th Cavalry Regiment as a Private; mustered out killed in action (wound through brain) at the Battle of Gettysburg.

He is buried at Gettysburg National Cemetery has a memorial there (#47678604)

The marker in Rural Hill is a cenotaph, probably requested by the family.
