Sgt. William R. Boughner was the son of Richard and Mary Boughner [Off. Pension Certificate #227.371]. In 1860 he was counted in the census in Montgomery Co. Ohio as a "Peddler," age 19, born in Indiana. At the time his parents were living in Wayne Co. Ind. Note that Montgomery Co. Oh. is one county east of Wayne Co. Indiana along the old National Trail (became US 40).

Sgt. Boughner enlisted in the Ohio 63rd Volunteer Infantry on 8/13/1862. He was killed in action on 3 Feb 1865 during the Battle of River's Bridge [See http://www.nps.gov/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/94rivers/94rivers.htm ] during Sherman's Carolinas Campaign [Off. Regimental Records NARA]. Previously he saw a great deal of action in Sherman's Army of the Tennessee in the Atlanta Campaign and then Sherman's "March to the Sea" in the Savannah Campaign of late 1864. He survived the bloody Battle of Corinth on Oct 2-3, 1862 where is regiment suffered a very high number of casualties.

His Official Regimental Records [Ohio Roll of Honor] lists his burial in the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC.
