John was born in Willershagen, Parish of Blankenhagen, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, the son of Johann Heinrich and Carolina Wolf. (His birth record from Blankenhagen Parish indicates April 8, 1834.) He immigrated to America in 1859 after serving as a seaman and then service in the British Navy and the Royal Marines. After the Sioux Uprising in 1862 took his father and brother, John settled on a farm in Milford Twp., Brown, MN with his mother Carolina that he inheritied from his half-brother, Carl Heuer, whose family also perished in the Dakota War. He was conscripted with the Union army in 1864 and served in Tennessee until June 1865 with Company A of the 11th Regiment of the Minnesota Infantry Volunteers. John married Emilie Klappenbach Bauer, the widow of a Civil War comrade, September 26, 1865 in Arlington, MN. He and Emilie had 9 children plus 2 from Emilie's previous marriage to Andrew Bauer. A young daughter, Lillea, was born May 12, 1875 but must have died young as she is not enumerated on the 1880 census.

Sometime after 1885, the family moved to Gaylord where they purchased and operated a hotel for many years. He died at the home of his son, Emil C. Clasen after suffering a fall.
