Vera Allison, 89, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Cordell Christian Care Center in Cordell, Oklahoma.
The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 1, 2008, in the chapel of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
A daughter of the late Elizabeth and Winters Scarlett, she was born January 26, 1919, in Alvord, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, of fifty-seven years, Harvey Allison; one son, Eugene Allison; and four brothers, George Scarlett, Donald Scarlett, Bobby Joe Walton and Ray Kniceley. The Central Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas, was the center of her life for over sixty years, caring for the children in the church nursery, kitchen supervisor and WMU.
Until recent years, she voluntarily watched over friends and family, running errands, cooking and cleaning. She attended countless basketball and baseball games over the years and was a Coyote Mother. Vera and Harvey had been active members of the D.A.V. and the American Legion and she served in the Post Office Women's Auxiliary.
Raising four sons, Vera never knew how many friends they would bring home to eat a meal. She always prepared plenty for them and many, many relatives. During "hard times," Vera and Harvey took family into their home. Her sons joked about their home being the "Allison Motel."
For the last four years, Vera lived with the caring family of her granddaughter, Ladonna Allison Beals, Terry Beals and four great-grandchildren in Cheyenne, Oklahoma.
Vera is survived by three sons, Jack Allison and wife, Teresa of Hallsville; Billy Allison and wife, Laquita of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Jerry Allison and wife, Sandy of San Antonio; two sisters, Vertie Lee Stanley of Oak Cliff and Patricia Vieth of Deer Park; four brothers, John Henry Scarlett of Throckmorton; Sonny Scarlett of Warner Robbins, Georgia, Oran Scarlett of Midland and Eddy Byrkett of Seymour. She was a loving grandmother to thirteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
She will be missed.
