Abram Van Wyck Budd was a descendant of Judge William Budd [Find A Grave Memorial# 111695859], the founder of New Mills, now Pemberton, New Jersey in 1691.
Son of James William Budd [Find A Grave Memorial# 111686892] and Sarah Howell Van Wyck [Find A Grave Memorial# 111687054].
Abram Budd's father died in 1833, less than three years after his wife, Sarah, died at the birth of their second son, Abram. James died at Pemberton on 26 Aug 1833, aged 35 years. The circumstances of his death are unknown but the New Jersey Mirror, September 5, 1833, states he died at his residence near Pemberton.
After James died, his infant children were raised by his brother, Samuel Woolston Budd. Samuel's son, Samuel Woolston Budd, Jr., was a founding professor of Marshall College.
Abram Van Wyck Budd received his A.B. from Franklin and Marshall College in 1847. Six years later he finished with honor the required course for the medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his diploma in 1853. Abraham Budd served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, following which he had a long and celebrated medical career.
