Mary Emma Gentry was born on February 6, 1900, near Gainesboro, Jackson County, Tennessee. Her parents were Simon L. Gentry and Mary Ann "Polly" Loftis Gentry.
Between 1900 and 1920, Simon and Polly moved their family to Clay County, Tennessee. So it was in Clay County that Mary Emma undoubtedly met George "Andy" Abney. The two were married on November 1, 1925, in Celina when Mary was 25 and Andy was 24.
Mary and Andy had at least five children--William Simon, Lindon Edward, Betty Sue, Josephine, and Georgia Lee. Andy served as a sheriff of Clay County to support his family while Mary took care of the home and children.
Andy died on October 13, 1963, in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky. He was 62 at the time. Mary died about 21 years after her husband. She died two days after her 85th birthday on February 8, 1985, in the Monroe County Medical Center, Monroe, Kentucky. She was buried beside Andy in the Fitzgerald Cemetery in Celina, Clay County, Tennessee.
