Stewart & *Genia

* Pronounced Jeannie

Charles Stewart Bane was born 23 oct 1877, in Tazewell Co., VA., a son of Joseph Howard Bane & Rachel Cammillie (Witten) Bane. His mother died when he was 11 years old, leaving her husband and five small children. Charles Stewart, the oldest, William Howard (Bill), SidneyHenry and a daughter Mamie. They were raised by a Negro slave they named "Black Mammy". They revered her as one of the "most straight laced, righteous woman they had ever knew".

"Black Mammy" is buried in the Whitten Family Cemetery. No one knew her real name.

Eugenia Melissa (Tabor) Bane was born in Tazewell Co., VA., 01 Feb 1879, a daughter of Elgan Whitley Tabor and Octavia Zane (Tiller) Tabor. She had five brothers : Ira Richard died at age 7, William David, Jerimiah Samuel, Robert Alvin and Berleley Kelly. Her four sisters were: Charlotte Lavinia, Bertha Elizabeth, Buelah May and Lucy Anna.

Stewart & Genia were married 27 Dec 1905 in Bluefield, Tazewell, VA. To this union were born two sons, Harold Sidney and Joseph Elgan. The four daughters were: Lena May, Anna Ruth and Mary Hazel. In 1912 a baby girl was stillborn or she died shortly after birth.
We may see her after the resurrection, a beautiful thought.

Stewart & Genia were blessed with another baby girl, not their own, but loved and cared for as their own. She was a bundle of joy for the entire Bane family. Thelma Elizabeth was born to Berkley Kelly and Dora Elizabeth (Harry) Tabor. Dora died 16 days after Elizabeth's birth. She died leaving her husband and six children. Several people wanted to adopt Elizabeth but her father didn't want to have his baby adopted.

The baby was very sick and needed special care.. Stewart and Genia said that they would take the baby and take care of her and when Berkley (Genia's brother) was ready for her he could take her. The doctor didn't give Genia any hope for the baby's life and she came home crying after consulting with Dr. Phlegar. With help from Stewart and Lena they nursed her to health. That was 72 years ago and she is still here!

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GENIA & STEWART

They were good neighbors. Mrs. Homer Shrader said they were the best neighbors they ever had . They always had the prettiest and best garden on our street. Genia loved to can fruits,vegetables and meats. She liked to sew , crochet and tat. She was a marvelous cook! She was always there when we got home from school. She cooked three meals a day. She sang as she worked, songs like, "In the Sweet Bye & Bye" and "We'll Understand It Better Bye & Bye". She liked to make quilts. She didn't go to church but she was a virtuous woman.

Stewart liked to work on the railroad but there was a "strike" and he never went back. He liked to garden too. He loved to read the daily news paper. He was an adament Democrat.
He kept up with politics. He sang hymns and played the piano with two fingers. I remember the day we got a new piano. I was so proud that Lena learned to play.

Many of Genia & Stewart's nieces lived in the country and when they wanted to go to high school or get a job in town our house was open and everyone was welcome . It was fun having them all at the house.

One of the things I liked the most was that they read to us and told us stories. Mama would recite poems to us that she learned at school. One was 'The Friendly Guide Post" and another was 'I love You Mother Said Little Fan". and I loved her to recite "Little Orphan Annie".

I am so thankful for the wonderful parents we had. This was signed: Hazel Neal
