Susan Brown married Charles S. Vaughan 1876 in Wisconsin. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Nellie Mae, Frank Leroy, Grace Elizabeth and Edward Hugh.

Charles was in the Civil War where he contracted malaria and he was never well again.

A visit Charles made to Eau Claire in between stays at the various veterans homes, Susan became pregnant again. She was 41 years old and Charles was 61 years old. They had divorced in 1896. He was on disability and she had only the money she made as a seamstress. She went quietly to Minneapolis and had her baby, a boy, on July 5, 1899, which was named on the birth certificate, Charles Vaughan. She gave the child to the Children's Finding Home in St. Paul, Minnesota. She went back to Eau Claire, and married Burr L. Avery on October 28, 1900.

Charles died May 14, 1916 in the Hot Springs, South Dakota National Veterans Home and was buried in Rapid City, South Dakota by his daughter and son-in-law, Grace and Fred A. Root. .Susan and Burr lived out the rest of their lives in Eau Claire.

The child was eventually adopted by George Taylor and Alma Olson Valentine of Dakota County, Minnesota, later of Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The fifth and last child of Charles and Susan Brown Vaughan became Vernon Clemens Valentine.
