They lived through the violence and persecution of the Mormons in Ohio, Missouri and Illinois, finally being forced to flee their home in Illinois in the dead of winter. She lost her mother 17 Nov 1841 in Nauvoo, Illinois.
During these times they had 10 children: Howard Keyes, 14 Apr 1835 died 15 Nov 1836 in Clay county Missouri; William Henry Keyes, 15 Apr 1837 died 15 Sep 1838 in Caldwell county Missouri; Alma Keyes, 10 Aug 1839 in Adams county, Illinois; Sarah Elizabeth Keyes, 6 Oct 1841; Edward Keyes, 15 Aug 1844; Lyman Keyes, 29 Jul 1847 born in Pisqah, Harrison, Iowa. Harrison was serving a mission for the church in Oregon with his family and that was why some of his children were born there. There was hostility against Mormons in Oregon also. While chopping wood at his home, Harrison had the axe shot from his hands from someone he never saw.
Eliza's sister Lucinda married Perry Keyes, Harrison's younger brother and they went through similar experiences until Perry Keyes died on the trail to Salt Lke city. She also lost a son 9 days after losing Perry.
Eliza died 17 Oct 1895 in Ogden Utah and was buried 18 Oct 1895, just 5 months after losing her beloved husband Harrison.
