Berga was the son of Francis Marion Austin and Nancy Condecia Coggins. Berg married Lema Benton on 28 January 1917, in Hartville, Missouri.

In 1930, Berga and his family were living in Montgomery, Wright County, Missouri. Berga was a manager of a farmers exchange.
