Picture of William posted by permission and courtesy of DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University (SMU) at Dallas, Texas. Copy and paste this link for the story behind the photograph: https://digitalcollections.smu.edu/digital/collection/jtx/id/598/rec/24. FindAGrave member Vicki Ragan Harris very kindly sent me the link to investigate if the photo was the William in my memorial. Research shows me that it is.

William's parents were King and Martha (Bass) Burgess. Their dates of death and burial locations are unknown.

William's siblings:
  Emmit Burgess
  James Robert Burgess
  Jessie S. Burgess
  Lafayette Burgess
  Mary J. Burgess Ewin

From the Widows' Application for Pension by William's widow, Sarah "Sallie" Burgess, she provided the information below and his proof of service was verified by the Office of Commissioner Pensions, State of Texas in Austin and the War Department, The Adjutant General's Office, Washington. William and Sallie married in May 1866 in Fayette County, Texas. William served in Whitfields 1st Texas Legion in Company D which was dissolved and reorganized becoming the 27th Regiment Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army (CSA). William served 3 years and 8 months. He enlisted on August 24, 1861.

Note: I received a request to link William to memorials created for his parents though the dates of death and burial locations are unknown. I decided to accept the links even though it is for burial unknowns. Because there is a high probability that those memorials could be deleted by Site Administrators in the future I am providing the known links to two of William's siblings in the bio area. Hopefully one day complete information will be found on his parents.
