Westlock Pioneer Passes
Alfred John Adkins Had Resided in the District Thirty-eight Years:
In spite of stormy weather, a large crowd gathered at Hazel Bluff Church on Monday afternoon, June 26th, to pay their last respects to one of the original settlers of this district, Mr. Alfred John Adkins, who passed away Friday, June 23rd after a long illness.
The Rev. W.D. Race officiated at the funeral service.
The pall-bearers were H. Patterson, C.H. Daly, A Smith, A.R. Brown, E. Renton, and A. Girard.
Interment was in the Hazel Bluff Cemetery.
Mr. Adkins was born at Bloxham, Oxfordshire, England, on August 16, 1874, came here in 1906 to take up homestead on which he ever since resided. Old Timers recall that Mr. Adkins kept at his farm the post office then known as Swallowhurst, until in 1913 Westlock appeared on the map and became the postal centre. In more recent years he was active in the Westlock and District Agricultural Society and the Westlock Cooperative Association.
Mr. Adkins leaves to morn his loss, his loving wife, two daughters, Mrs. J. (Barbara) Pollard and Mrs. J. (Sheila) Rowland, and three sons, James, William, and Richard, all of Westlock. One brother, George Adkins, who has recently moved from Westlock to Victoria, B.C. There are also seven sisters, Mrs. L. Hermon in England, Mrs. W. Bretelle of Edmonton, and Mrs. Stanley, Mrs. A.P. Bruder, Mrs. C. Sherwin, Mrs. M. MacDougall and Mrs. R. Grant, all of Westlock. There are 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
