Donald W. Barnes Sr., 87, of South Sterling, died Tuesday, May 12, in Brighten at Julia Ribaudo, Lake Ariel. He was the husband of the late Barthelia (Bartleson) Barnes who died in May 2000.
Born in Dunmore, son of the late John and Eva (Wombacker) Barnes, Donald retired in 1982 as Warehouse Supervisor at the Tobyhanna Army Depot where he had worked for over 20 years.
He was a member of the Army Artillery during World War II and served in the Philippines and was a 54-year member of American Legion Post 859, Newfoundland. A member of the Hemlock Grove United Methodist Church, Donald was an avid outdoorsmen and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and especially tending to his flower and vegetable garden. An outstanding athlete, he was a leading scorer in the Wayne County basketball in the 1940 season, and was a star second baseman for the Newfoundland Bears baseball team in the late 1940s and 50s.
Donald is survived by a daughter, Barbara Christopher and her husband, John, of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; a son, Donald Barnes Jr. and his wife, Yvonne, of South Carolina; three grandchildren, Lisette Pringle of Florence, S.C., Douglas Barnes of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jeffrey Christopher and his wife, Jennifer, of Salem, Ohio; two great-grandsons, Hunter and Cameron Christopher; and a sister, Evelyn Lorch of Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, in the Arthur J. Frey Funeral Home, Route 191, Village of LaAnna, South Sterling, with Rev. Rob Visscher officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Sterling. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening, May 15, at the funeral home.
Memorial remembrances may be made out to the charity of the donor's choice.
