|Birth: ||Jan. 1, 1834|
County Cork, Ireland
|Death: ||Dec. 17, 1918|
There is quite a bit of confusion surrounding James B. Birmingham Sr.'s birth date. General consensus is that his birth date is February 26, 1847. This is in direct conflict with the date that is on his death certificate which is: January 1, 1834. His age on the death certificate was listed as 84 years, 11 months and 16 days.
Various years of census films would indicate the birth date is in the 1840s and not 1834.
1870 Census: Age 23 - This would indicate a birth year of 1847.
1880 Census: Age 35 - This would indicate a birth year of 1845.
1900 Census: Age 55 - b. Feb 1845.
1910 Census: Age 68 - This would indicate a birth year of 1842.
The 1900 Census said James Immigrated in 1858 and had been in the US 42 years, the 1910 census had the date of immigration as 1860. There was a James Birmingham listed in New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 that arrived May 2, 1859 age 16, which would indicate a birth year of 1843.
Other information says James came to America with his parents when he was 13 years old. If he came in 1858 like the 1900 census has - that would indicate a birth year of 1845. If he came in 1860 like the 1910 census has - that would indicate a birth year of 1847. All of this seems to support the fact that the January 1, 1834 birth date is incorrect.
We know James married Elsie Kathryn Bay, but there seems to be two marriage dates: The Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society marriage index, provided by a researcher, gives the marriage date for "I. Bermingham and Elsie Bay" as February 14, 1867. FamilySearch.org has a marriage record that has been transcribed to read: "I Be?ingham and Eley Bay" married February 14, 1867. These two records appear to be for James Birmingham and Elsie Bay and agree as to the date. The other marriage date comes from records of a Bay Family member that says they were married February 28, 1866 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa and the marriage was witnessed by Humphrey and Martha Bay. The early date would certainly fit with the birth of a child, Mary Ann, who was born February 22, 1867 and died in March 1867 - that is if her birth date is correct.
Just which one of the two marriage dates is the correct one is not known for sure at this time.
Their children Mary Ann, Sarah Ellen, John David, Jennie Nancy, Edward, Susan, Timothy, Anna Lillian, James, and Patrick.
