Funeral services were held in Wilson, North Carolina, this week for Dr. W. G. Spencer Jr., formerly of Franklin, who died Monday of a heart attack. The 49-year-old obstetrician was the son of the late Dr. William Gear Spencer, who served as president of Franklin College in the 1930s and early 1940s.
Born in Franklin and a 1941 graduate of Franklin College, Dr. Spencer moved to Wilson, NC in 1952 where he served as an obstetrician and gynecologist at Woodard-Herring hospital there. After receiving his undergraduate degree, Dr. Spencer earned his doctorate from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1944. Between his internship and residency at Veterans Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., Dr. Spencer served two years in the Army Medical Corps.
He was a member of several professional, church and civic organizations in Wilson and was named "Outstanding man of the year" by the community's Jaycees in 1955. An editorial in the Wilson newspaper described Dr. Spencer as a person "who was admired by all who knew him, for his great ability and qualities of leadership." "The community has lost an outstanding citizen," said the newspaper's editorial.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Marian Hildebrand Spencer; a daughter and a son at home [names redacted to preserve privacy of living persons]; his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Burns Spencer of Granville, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Russell Connett of Arcata, California; four brothers, Dr. Hugh Spencer of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Dr. John Spencer of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Dr. Lewis Spencer of Ottawa, Kansas; and Frank Spencer of Indianapolis.
