Birth: Nov. 1, 1913
Death: Apr. 24, 2011

Reddin "Capt. Salty" Brunson, 97, passed away from complications of pneumonia on April 24, 2011, at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. He was born Nov. 1, 1913.

He was a lifelong resident of Destin, Fla., except for about 30 years that he and his wife Gladys lived in Clarksville after retiring from East Pass Marina, where he was owner with his partner, Fred Jones. He was a fisherman all his life until he retired. He spent most of his young adult life promoting Destin as "The Luckiest Fishing Village in the World." Capt. Salty was the last seine boat captain from the original old Destin days.

In 2004, he refurbished the old Primrose. His passion was work. He worked on a fishing boat for Dewey Destin when he was in his early 90s. He was quite a craftsman and built many pieces of furniture in his late 80s and 90s for friends, family and for donations. He was quite "The Man." He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of being associated with him.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Gladys Parrish Brunson; daughters, Olivia and Jo; grandsons, Billy Edington and Ricky Mennillo; great-grandson, Josh Bonham; his mother and dad; two sisters; and four brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Lykins and her husband Randie of Preston, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a loving companion and friend of 10 years, Sarah Matthews.
Credit is given to Arturo Mennillo for Mr. Brunson's photo.
There will be a visitation from 10 a.m. to noon April 28 at Adams Funeral Home in Blountstown and graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at Destin Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Brunson, Randy Edington, Greg Edington, Tony Mennillo, Tommy Swanson and Tommy Michaels.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Destin History & Fishing Museum Foundation, P.O. Box 521, Destin FL 32540. in memory of Capt. Salty.

Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
