ST. GEORGE -- Norma Bringhurst Empey, age 91, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004 at her home in St. George. She was born May 29, 1912 in Toquerville, Washington County, Utah, the daughter of Marias William and Lillian Dalton Bringhurst.
She married Howard Empey February 3, 1932 in the St. George Temple. Six children were born to this union. He preceded her in death March 11, 1979.
Born and raised in Toquerville, Norma always recalled fondly of finding the first Sego Lily of the season each year. Her father raised fruit and she told often of making trips to Cedar City with homemade fig jam and other fruit products. She was chosen in her youth to present President Warren G. Harding with a basket of fruit from Toquerville on his visit to Southern Utah. Graduating from Hurricane High School, Norma had the opportunity to attend college to train as a teacher, but chose to stay at home to help with her failing mother.
Norma was very active in her church, serving as Jr. Sunday School Coordinator for many years. She loved working in the temple and doing genealogy work. She was an astute businesswoman, opening the first self-service laundry in St. George. She also operated a beauty shop with her daughter, Lawanna, and then operated a successful floral shop after attending school in Colorado. Work was her forte and she taught her children the same.
Norma was very active in the Republican Party, serving many years as Judge of Election, and also as Voting Registrar. Norma was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Every child and grandchild benefitted from the handmade quilts tied by their grandmother. In 1980, Norma returned to school at Dixie College to improve her writing and artistic talents. She had work published in the Dixie College Southern Quill, and her paintings grace many walls. She graduated from Dixie College Institute with her grandson, Brent.
Surviving family include her: two sons and three daughters, Keith Howard (Margaret) Empey, Kendall Bringhurst Empey, Janice (Ralph) Lamoreaux, Lawanna Justet, all of St. George, and Carla Jean (George) Christianson, of Prescott, Arizona; 14 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Mary Alice Hunter. She is preceded in death by her: parents; husband; son, Merlin; son-in-law, Eugene Justet; grandson, Gary Empey; brother, Ivan; and sisters, Orlene, Doris, and LaRae.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., prior to services, at the Mortuary.
