Joshua was the son of William and Priscilla (Johnson) Ruark, and the husband of Selina Sutton. They were married on Sept. 17, 1865 in Neosho, Newton Co., MO. They had 7 children; Theodosia Earnest, Belle, Walter, Mollie, Freddy, William Ely & Luther. Joshua was a Sgt.in the 8th Missouri Cavalry during the Civil War. He severed over three years and was captured twice and barely escaped being shot while in the hands of "Bushwhackers". One time he and a companion were in swimming, when his companion was shot and Ruark barely escaped.- - Story in the 1917 Dade History He was a teacher, farmer, preacher and County Assessor for Lawrence Co.,Mo (1874 -1876).
