Pueblo Chieftain, Mar 10, 1928 - DIED - ASHLEY J D, aged 65 yrs, Friday at his
residence 914 West 13th st. Remains in care of T. G. McCarthy and sons.
John D. Ashley, one of the city's well known and beloved citizens and a
resident of Pueblo for the past 19 years passed peacefully in his rest at an
early hour Friday moring at his residence 914 W 13th following a long illness.
"Jack" Ashley as he was known to his hosts of friends was for 13 years in the
employ of the Santa Fe railroad here. Later he was associated with the
Southern Colorado Power company. He came to Pueblo with Mrs. Ashley from
Cripple Creek, where he had resided for a number of years. Mr. Ashley was a
Spanish war veteran, having enlisted in the second calvary, U. S. volunteers,
and was a member of Torrey's Rough Riders" during the war.
He was a member of the First Baptist church and of the O.R.E. Surviving him
are his wife, 3 sisters Mrs. I. Kesterson, Yates City, Kansas; Mrs. T. C.
Lockwood, Portland, Ore, and Mrs. Mattie Couch of Kansas City Mo., 2 bros.
Ben D. Ashley of Wichita, Ks; and P. R. Ashley of San Francisco, Calif. The
remains will lie in state in the funeral chapel. Interment Mountain View Cem.

Monday, March 12 - The funeral of John D. Ashley will take place this afternoon
at 2:30 O'clock in the funeral chapel of T. G. McCarthy and sons. The Rev. C.
Arlin, Heydon, paster of the First Baptist church will officiate. Members of
the Spanish War veterans, of which the deceased was a member, will attend and
taps will be sounded at the grave, Interment on the family lot in Mountain View
March 13 - 1928 - Beautiful and impressive services were held for the late John
D. Ashley in the funeral chapel of T. G. McCarthy and Sons at 2:30 o'clock
Monday afternoon. Reverend C Arlin Heydon, pastor of the First Baptist church,
officiated. Mrs. V. A. Hagaman, accompained by Mrs. E. W. Spencer sang "In
the Garden" "Sometime We'll Understand" and "When the Roll is Called" This
large chapel was filled to capacity with Mr. Ashley's friends and associates
and the floral tributes were many and beautiful. The casket was completely
covered with flowers as were the floral stands and chancel. The pallbearers
were Messrs. W. R. Rollins. M. E. Radley L. Wirth, Geo Westzler, Fred Riedy
and W. Hutchinson. The flowerbears were Edward Ledwith, Roy Socord, F. H.
Doty and P. F. Haggerty. Interment was in the Ashley lot in Mountain View Cemetery.
