A check of the death index in the Philadelphia archives provides only one male Barr who died accidentally within the time frame to be Ethel's father: William J. Barr, who died on May 4, 1908.

J. W. Barr Attempts to Alight From Moving Car and Falls
In a hurry to alight a moving trolley car last night John W. Barr, of 1828 Mifflin St. fell and sustained injuries from which he died immediately after being admitted to St. Agnes Hospital. His mother and daughter were notified of the accident and when they arrived at the hospital they were told of his death. The mother collapsed. She was admitted in the hospital for treatment.

KILLED HURRYING TO SICK WIFE
Anxious to get home to his sick wife, John William Barr of 1828 Mifflin Street, fell from a trolley car at Seventeenth and Porter streets, last night, and landed on his head, sustaining a fracture of the skull. He died almost immediately after being taken to St. Agnes's Hospital. The man's mother was so overcome by the shock of hearing of her son's death that she had to be admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Barr So Badly Hurt That He Died On Operating Table
Jumping from a swiftly-moving trolley car at 17th and McClellan streets yesterday, John W. Barr of No. 1728 Mifflin Street was thrown violently to the street, and, besides a fractured skull, sustained a broken leg and arm. He died 15 minutes later on the operating table at St. Agnes Hospital.

All three of the above listed newspapers published the following obituary on May 6, 1908:

"Suddenly on May 4, 1908 William J. Barr son of the late John and Catherine Barr at his late residence 1828 Mifflin Street." The notice stated notice of funeral arrangements would be made soon.
