They lived in Allegan, Kalamazoo and Eaton Counties in Michigan, and returned to Otsego in Allegan County for their last years.
It seems Clarissa was a feisty lady and not to be tampered with. The story is told that one day a bum came along and was going to force Clarissa to give him something to eat. She was real handy with a hand gun and soon convinced him to move on. The next morning there was a skull and cross bones on the gate to warn other "travelers".
She died following a stroke of apoplexy at the age of 67.
