Clarissa was born in Avoca, Steuben Co. NY to James and Teressa Decker Armstrong. She was the last of 9 living children. Her siblings included Phebe, Roxalana, Isaac, Eliphalet, William, Thomas, James Jr, Jason Peter, and twins - Alford and Albert who did not survive. Her mother passed away when she was about 6 years old. Two years later she and her father relocated to Allegan County Michigan where other Armstrongs lived.

In 1873 she married Hyman Howe. Little is known about him, and I can find no record of children. In 1879 she married Charles McLalin. They had one daughter, Luella born Sep 6, 1879, died Jun 1, 1952. In 1883 she married Moses Bedunah in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They had seven children who lived to adulthood -

John born May 21, 1884, died 1930
George born Jan 31, 1886, died Jul 11, 1928
James born Feb 14, 1888, died Jun 20, 1960
Julia born Jan 20, 1890, died Aug 5, 1915
Mabel born May 1, 1893, died Jul 28, 1909
Jay born Mar 11, 1895, died Oct 12, 1918
Chloe born Jun 4, 1900, died Apr 8, 1949

They lived in Allegan, Kalamazoo and Eaton Counties in Michigan, and returned to Otsego in Allegan County for their last years.

It seems Clarissa was a feisty lady and not to be tampered with. The story is told that one day a bum came along and was going to force Clarissa to give him something to eat. She was real handy with a hand gun and soon convinced him to move on. The next morning there was a skull and cross bones on the gate to warn other "travelers".

She died following a stroke of apoplexy at the age of 67.
