Joel Baba of Langhorne died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at St. Mary Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was 81.
Mr. Baba was born and raised in the Logan section of Philadelphia and had resided in Middletown Township for the past 49 years.
He was a 1945 graduate of Northeast High School in Philadelphia where he set a Philadelphia Public School record of 448 points when he captured the city's scholastic All-Around Gymnastics Championship as a senior.
He was awarded his bachelor of science from Syracuse University in 1951 where he won the Eastern Collegiate All-Around and National Collegiate Floor Exercise Championships. He was awarded his master's degree from Temple University where he coached gymnastics for 2 years. He also attended Rider University in Ewing, N.J.
Mr. Baba began his teaching career with the School District of Philadelphia in 1956. In 1957, he became employed with the Neshaminy School District where he taught health and physical education. He was also a class advisor and equipment manager for the football team. Mr. Baba coached the boy's gymnastics team from 1957 to 1975 and again from 1986 to 1988. He led the teams to the Pennsylvania State Invitational Championships and had a 212-46 record. He also led the teams to 11 League Championships and 1 State Title, the PIAA Championships, in 1986. He also coached boy's varsity volleyball from 1988 to 1991 and was an administrator from 1975 to 1985.
Mr. Baba also coached the Princeton University Men's Gymnastics Team from 1970 to 1977. He was the owner of the Joel Baba School of Gymnastics in Penndel from 1981 to 1992.
One of Mr. Baba's proudest accomplishments was being featured on the cover of Strength and Health Magazine in 1953. Other accomplishments include a full gymnastics scholarship to Syracuse University in 1948 and being a part of the U.S. Men's Olympic Gymnastics Team in 1952.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, where he was a physical training instructor from 1953 to 1955.
He also enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary Medical Center.
Mr. Baba was the beloved husband of the late Lillian Baba.
He was the loving father of Sharon Gainer and her husband, Bob, of Langhorne, Stephanie Miguelez, and her husband, David, of Langhorne and Nadine Grant and her husband, Eric, of Yardley; and grandfather of Nicholas Gainer, Austin Grant and Danielle Miguelez. He will also be sadly missed by his brother, Jonathan Baba Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev.; his sisters, Sylvia Baba and Julie Gaby both of Miami, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
