A World War II veteran and military historian."He did a lot of research to see if documents from the war should be preserved and included in the history of the department of the Army", said Magdelena R. (Krebs) his wife of 55 years. He served as a sergeant in the 302d Field Artillery Battalion,76th Infantry Division in central Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to the United States in 1950 working for the Department of Defense as a historian for the Army Chief of History in Washington, D.C. In 1956 he was transfered to Natick, Massachusetts and began working as historian for the Quartermaster Research and Engineering Center. In 1962 he became the historian for the Air Force Electronic System Division at Hanscom Air Force Base. When he retired in 1977 he was awarded the Air Force medal of meritorious service. Charles loved the Boston Red Sox, harness racing and cigars. He avoided exercise and disliked fruits and vegetables. He once told me with a wink and a laugh, "I won't eat anything that grows from the ground!" He lived in Framingham for 30 years and died of respiratory failure at the Kathleen Daniel healthcare facility in Framingham. He was 92 years old.
