Benjamin served as a private in the 202nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infanty, Company A (Civil War). He died on November 11, 1864, of wounds received at Salem Church, Virginia, on October 8, 1864. Benjamin is recorded as buried at Alexandria, Virginia, grave 2,875 - as per Samuel P. Bates' "History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers". (NB: A search of the records at Alexandria shows no such name recorded. The only grave numbered 2,875 is that of a New York man, Timothy O'Leary.)

Benjamin also served as a private with the 81st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G.
