The Onlooker, 02 Nov 1939: "MRS. C.G. HOILES RITES TODAY. In the passing of Mrs. Katherine Hoiles, Robertsdale lost one of its most loyal and beloved citizens. Mrs. Hoiles died at her home Saturday evening at 6:10 following a lingering illness of the past 15 months. The deceased came to Robertsdale about 25 years ago with her family from Chicago and with Mr. Hoiles was engaged in the grocery and mercantile business up until about two years ago. She had endeared herself in the lives of all who knew her, being well known throughout South Alabama, and took an active part in all things that helped to build the community and make of it a cleaner and more pleasant place in which to live. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, being a member of Thurza Chapter No. 273, of which she was a past worthy matron. A large group of friends gathered at the Hoiles' residence on Tuesday afternoon to pay their last respects to the deceased. The Rev. Marvin C. Elmore, pastor of the Baptist Church, conducted the services and the hymns were furnished by the quartette of the Baptist Church, composed of Mrs. W.J. Bryan, Mrs. Orvis M. Brown, T.V. Abercrombie, Sr., and J. Lee Palmer. Impressive services were completed at the cemetery by member of the Thurza Chapter, O.E.S., being led by Worthy Matron Ora Mae Palmer and Worthy Matron James A. Benford. Surviving are her husband, Charles G. Hoiles; three sons, Walter W. Hoiles of Robertsdale, Thomas E. and Charles, both of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Anna E. Hurter of Chicago; two brothers, Francis and Dr. John Lederle, both of Chicago; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Walter Hoiles Robertsdale and Mrs. Thomas Hoiles of Chicago; three grandchildren, Walter, Eleanor and Richard Hoiles, all of Robertsdale. Serving as pallbearers were Mike Bowen, Herbert Starkey, Clarence Gilchrist, R.H. Sisson, Leonard Bankester and Harry J. Wilters. Honorary pallbearers were Willie Beverley, William P. Baldwin, Tony Klumpp, Frank V. Barchard, Lous Glendenning, Oswalt Hansen, Harry E. Marker, E.G. Poos, J.B. Wilters, James Sanca, Dr. Amos Garrett, Edward Anderson, Harry Peterson, Thomas Vonashek, J. Shenk, W.J. Bryan, Duke Dyson, Ort Ertzinger, Lloyd Magney, James Palmer, T.V. Abercrombie, Sr., and H.M. Knowlton. Interment was in the Silverhill Cemetery with Christensen directing. The vacancy left in the hearts of many people by the death of Mrs. C.G. Hoiles will long remain unfilled. Mrs. Hoiles was a warm personality who enjoyed and respected the love of her friends. She had resided in Robertsdale about 25 years and made a host of friends through business and social contacts. Her death has had its most intense effect among friends and the family, who always found her pleasure and satisfaction in her companionship. Condolences are extended in their hour of grief."
