Business Executive, Union Civil War Veteran Soldier. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Gerhard H. Alms. Educated in the common schools, he became interested in the dry goods business. In 1865, he partnered with his brother, Frederick H. Alms, and William Doepke to form the Alms and Doepke Company which became the leading wholesale and retail dry goods establishment in Cincinnati and later the largest in Ohio. During the Civil War, he volunteered to participate in the defense of Cincinnati when the city was threatened to be attacked by the Confederates. He joined a 30 day unit that was part of Company E of the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Militia in September of 1862. He was the husband of Anna Elizabeth Bogen. Alms later died at his residence in Avondale in 1920 when he was 77 years old.
