Doctor, Union Civil War Surgeon. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Daniel and Anna Ames. He was a graduate of Woodward High School. When the Civil War began, Ames was commissioned as an Assistant Surgeon for the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He later became the 1st Assistant Surgeon with the regiment and marched with them during several major engagements in western Virginia and the Western Theatre. Of his service, Brigadier General Ebenezer Dumont wrote in a letter to Ohio Governor David Tod dated March 24, 1862:

"that Dr. Fisher W. Ames, was noted for his skill as well as for his industry and assiduity in the discharge of his duties, that he (Dumont) knew of no Assistant Surgeon who had done more or better service nor anyone so well worthy of promotion, that Ames wished to be promoted and made a principal Surgeon, and that this was a promotion eminently fit to be made and one which he did not hesitate to recommend."

After the war, Ames returned to Cincinnati to practice as a physician. He later died in Cincinnati from typhoid fever in 1876 when he was 53 years old. He was the husband of Maria L. Hendricks Fisher.
