Father John was executed in Tsarskoe Selo, near St. Petersburg, during the Bolshevik Revolution. This finished a life of faith which included the establishment of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Chicago, which still stands as a landmark in the city. It was later designated a Cathedral proper.
He is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox faith as a martyr and a saint. He was interred in a crypt within St. Catherine's Cathedral in Tsarskoe Selo. The Cathedral of St. Catherine was destroyed in the 1930s, but has recently been rebuilt. It was rededicated in 2010. It is unclear if Father John's remains are still extant there.
However, the Sophia Cathedral of St. Petersburg maintains a shrine of his relics.
