Tec 5 Donald A. Dettmer was a member of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion which originated as an Illinois National Guard Tank Company from Maywood, Illinois. His rank was the equivalent of that of a sergeant.
He fought on Bataan from Janaury 1942 until Filipino and American Forces were surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. He took part in what is now known as "the Bataan Death March" from Mariveles to San Fernando, There, he and other POWs wwere packed into small wooden boxcars and taken to Capas. From there, he walked ten miles to Camp O'Donnell.
As a Prisoner of War, he was held at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He died while a POW at Cabanatuan.
After the war, the remains of Donald Dettmer were returned to the United States. He was reburied on October 23, 1948.
