John Eber was drafted into the U.S. Army and assigned to Hq Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He trained at Ft. Knox, Kentucky before taking part in maneuvers in Louisiana in the fall of 1941. He was arrived to the Philippine Islands in November 1941 and lived through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield. Eber served in the Philippine Islands during the first battles of World War II involving American tanks and became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. He took part in the Bataan Death March and was held at Camp O'Donnell. He died from dysentery while a POW. After the war, his remains were returned home. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
